Karyn Hodgens studied child development at California State University, Chico before receiving her master's degree in education with a specialization in elementary mathematics. With a multiple subjects teaching credential, for over two decades, her passion has been to create meaningful and engaging curriculum that gets kids excited about learning. A career specialist in mathematics, Karyn is especially passionate about making math relevant to our everyday lives.
Trained as a Mathematics Their Way and Math...A Way of Thinking instructor, Karyn has worked with teachers all over the United States showing them how to engage students in meaningful mathematics and problem solving. She has presented at numerous National Council of Teachers of Mathematics conferences and conducted hands-on mathematics in-services for schools and school districts.
As a presenter for Prime Presentations, an educational consulting firm, Karyn created Algebraic Thinking is Elementary: Generate Algebra Power in Your Students Right From the Very Start, a workshop that shows K-5 teachers and administrators how to build a solid algebraic foundation in the elementary years.
In 2006, along with her husband, John, she co-founded Kidnexions (kid-neck-shuns), an educational company focused on helping kids make connections between what they are learning and their everyday lives.
Karyn still works with students in the classroom. She continues to look for new ways to make the teaching of math concepts fun and engaging. You can be sure to find these in a future Family Math Night kit.
